Wastewater Sustainability

The Loxahatchee River Environmental Control District upholds and manages a wastewater treatment facility that is located in Jupiter FL. This wastewater treatment facility not only protects public health and the area’s natural resources, but also happens to be sustainable. The wastewater system is made up of over 250 miles of gravity sewer lines, 1,000 low pressure pumping units, 195 pumping stations and 584,400 feet of major force mains (www.loxahatcheeriver.org). The system carries wastewater from homes and businesses to the treatment facility, where it then goes through many treatment processes. After, going through each process the now clean water is stored and distributed amongst golf courses, parks, and communities. This wastewater facility has the capacity to treat 11 million gallons of wastewater a day, allowing 95% of the wastewater in this area to be recycled (www.loxahatcheeriver.org). Currently, over 50% of Florida’s drinking water is being used for irrigation (www.loxahatcheeriver.org). This wastewater facility allows this region to sustain and recycle the fresh water supply for drinking water. Also, a goal of the Loxahatchee River District is to eliminate septic tanks in the area, because of their harm to the environment. The recent system of sewer lines they have installed has eliminated many septic tank systems and helped the environment.
